What can I expect in a session?

I am warm and aim to help you feel at ease in our sessions.

All sessions last an hour. Longer sessions might be considered useful and discussed on an individual basis. Weekly sessions are recommended, although for family work we might also meet fortnightly.

The session will include talking and sharing your questions, thoughts and feelings. Sometimes it will include drawing and writing things down. I also work creatively with different techniques such as role play –these are useful tools in creating change – they will only be used if you are comfortable with them.

What benefits can I expect from working with you?

A number of benefits are often experienced:

  • To feel like someone understands what you are going through.
  • To find different ways of thinking about your situation.
  • To have a space to think about your own thoughts and feelings away from usual everyday life.
  • A chance to better understand what you want and need.
  • To develop tools that can help you.

How does therapy work?

We all have times of crisis and difficulty in our lives. Sometimes we are able to consider these times as opportunities for our own growth and development and a chance to move something forward. Therapy aims to introduce difference which is part of generating change.

Developing a trusting relationship is central to the process. This means that we work together to discover how to take the steps towards change at a pace that is both manageable and effective. I hope that this will leave you feeling listened to, supported and acknowledged - all of which can help you bring about the change you want.

How do I find the right person for me?

Finding the right counsellor or psychotherapist is one of the most important aspects of therapy. Each therapist will have their own way of working, and it's ok to spend time looking around and questioning your prospective therapist in order to find out if they will be the right person for you. Coming for one or two sessions will help you know if you have found the right person.  It is important to find someone who is registered, insured and fully qualified.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding concerns for both adults and children are the responsibility of everyone, and I have a duty of care to ensure that any concerns are responsibly responded to. This may include notification of my concerns to social services or a GP. In all instances I will endeavour to do this collaboratively and with prior conversation.

Working with difference

Paying attention to difference and diversity is a central concern of my practice. This includes cultural, ethnic, racial, sexuality, (dis)ability and religious differences. I aim to incorporate cultural humility into my practice and I regularly consider how to maintain a relationship with my own limitations, assumptions and biases.
